“I do not count my life of any value nor as precious to myself if only I may accomplish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God” – Acts 20:24
Most Christians like to “play it safe.” They don’t like to do anything that will compromise their testimony or touch anything “sinful” with a 10-foot pole. Christians have become so fixated on technicalities that many of us have put ourselves in a protective bubble. Instead of going into the world to shine a light for Christ, we have built a cave in a mountain and lit a candle. It’s a little counterproductive to one of the best-known passages of the Bible:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” –Matthew 5:14-16 ESV
I went to a university with the motto, “Training Champions for Christ.” It was a powerful message that we heard over and over again. My years at this school taught me valuable lessons on what it means to stand on your faith and the steps that are necessary to do so.
“It is assumed that the skeptic has no bias; whereas he has a very obvious bias in favor of skepticism.” –G.K. Chesterton
Given the wit and wisdom of ole’ Chesterton I decided then that I would proclaim the name of Christ from ever area of my life and shine His light into the darkness, despite the skepticism. People won’t always agree with my standards but my purpose is not to form them to my standards, my purpose is to show them Christ.
The Old Testament boasts many stories of men and women whose faithfulness to God made them a beacon of light among the status quo. Daniel and his friends, Shadrach Meshach and Abednego were sentenced to death because of their faithfulness to God. God saw them through and exalted them because of their obedience to Him. I hope to reflect the same tenacity as they.
Life outside the “Christian Bubble” is a lot different. Many American Christians now limit their stand to a line in their twitter bio. But I refuse to settle for comfort and convenience with my Faith. I believe risks must be taken to further the kingdom of God. With our culture becoming increasingly far from God, the men and women of Christ need to stand up and speak the truth loudly into the darkness. Doing this means that you have to risk your reputation in order to impact the world.
God does not call us to a life of peace and happiness but of service and joy.
What’s the difference between happiness and joy?
Happiness is temporary, joy is persistent. Happiness is a subtle feeling when things are going our way. Joy is a secure hope we have in a sovereign and loving God. Things may not be going our way but we know that God is in control and that His ways are not our ways, which, given our state of depravity is fine with me!
Friends, it is my hope and prayer that you find the same saving grace that I have found in my loving Savior Jesus Christ. Nothing compares, nothing redeems.
